I don't think the topics being merged means that we're narrowing the focus to just family expectations; I think we're widening the field to encompass the fact that the two topics are so entwined that we can't discuss one without the other. If I know this group, we are just going to discuss how awesome Judy is and it will be the Judy Fabray Power Hour Brunch. I feel like we have like a Venn Diagram happening and there are these two wide topics, but we'll only talk about the intertwined. And I'm not sure why I'm emotionally attached to this issue. I think I'm going to have to leave it and then come back, when I'm being understanding and rational about life.

Update: I have temporarily changed them to a merged panel called "Family Dynamics and Expectations." When y'all put your heads together and get me a name and description, I'll update the site.
Also, just to reiterate what I said in the Tumblr post: I know everyone is going to have tough choices to make. This is the nature of having so much awesome packed into one weekend. You're welcome to air your frustration as you feel you need to. I have some tough choices to make, myself. But maybe we could also talk about what things we are excited about? :-)

I feel like we have like a Venn Diagram happening and there are these two wide topics, but we'll only talk about the intertwined. This is why we have moderators. The Expectations panel was the more popular with the Family Dynamics on not receiving that many votes, so merging them just means the Family topic will be absorbed into the Expectations panel and we'll give it a new title and have more substance to work with. And an hour is a long time to talk about something, particularly when you're working with something so specific. I personally think that having a merged panel will keep the conversation moving rather than running out of steam a half an hour in. As John said, everyone is going to have points where they have to choose. Heck, there are things I'll miss out on because I'm modding something that's opposite a topic I very much want to discuss. But there are also plenty of other opportunities to chat about these things with all the like-minded folks who will be there. Really, when you look at it, the panels are talking points to keep everything in motion for the weekend. But overall, we're spending the weekend talking about Faberry. There's going to be overlap and repetition just given what the overall conversation is about. And then they bone.

I totally hear you -- there is both overlap in these topics and then separate parts to each. I understand feeling protective of your topics, too! I know I'm certainly protective of mine. I do think kben is right, though, that the moderators can make sure that all of the shades get covered, and this will ensure we have enough solid discussion for an hour that can then continue at lunch or whatever if there's more to say. (And the place and time for just Judy Fabray Power Hour is not here, which I know they know.) I resisted at first, but the more I think about it, it makes more sense to merge than not. Trust! It's going to be good :-)

I have a question...Is there any way we could try to make a few of the panels half an hour so we can all go to everything? Like, if there are 2 topics scheduled opposite one another, we take a show of hands at the start of the hour. We still run both, but with everyone having the option to attend both because they're each half an hour instead of taking up the full time individually.

Anyone at any time can choose to go from one room to the other. You aren't obligated to stick around for the whole 50 minutes for any particular panel (unless you're the mod). So, if you wanted to go to one for the first half and then to the other for the second half, you are perfectly welcome to do that. I don't want to cut the conversations short; we won't be doing that because it's not fair to people who do want to talk about that topic the whole time. I want the general atmosphere at the con to be that people don't take it personally if someone gets up and goes to see what's going on in the next room at any point in time :-) (Typically, people stay put for a whole panel, but my point is that nobody HAS to except the mods.)
